Hall of Fame Coach Retires

Davenport Schools and Bulldog Football are saying goodbye to their longtime and Hall of Fame coach John Greenfield. Greenfield, who completed his 21st season as Davenport’s head football coach in the fall, took over the program in the fall of 2004 while he was still serving as the district’s school superintendent.

”I became the coach that season,” Greenfield said. “I volunteered to coach for a couple of seasons to try to get the program established in the eight man game.”

Greenfield was inducted into the Oklahoma Eight Man Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2023. At the time of his induction, Greenfield had this to say about the program. “I hope that I have instilled hardwork and honesty,” Greenfield said. “We have one rule: The Do Right Rule! I tell them that if there is ever any question in their mind about any situation on whether it is right or wrong, it's probably wrong so don't do it!”

Greenfield’s career record in 11 man and 8 man football is 229 wins and 126 losses. His 8 man record in Davenport is 208 wins and 57 losses; including a State Championship in 2015, State Runner-up 2006 and 2011, Semi Final appearances in 2004, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 with 11 District Championships.

Greenfield says it takes a lot to have a successful football program: 1. You must have great players and parental support; 2. You must have coaches with supporting families that buy into your program; 3. You must have an Administration that supports you; 4. Community support: It takes many, many volunteers to help keep a program on top.

“I have been very blessed to be a part of the Davenport Community the past couple of decades,” Greenfield said. “The overall support has been unbelievable. A man couldn't ask for more.”

Congratulations, coach on a job well done. Enjoy your retirement!
